That's what I figured: let it soak, then wipe off any excess.

On my E36, I was using Vinylex and though it worked well, it always left some oily residue on the glass where it contacts the weatherstripping... Even after wiping off the excess... And then it would get smeared across the glass when you raised and lowered the window.
