Doesn't it have a lot to do with the torque converter in an auto copping a lot of the abuse during takeoff/gear changes or when the output speed is significantly different from the engine input? You torque converter is going to die with excessive power before your diff does.
The manual is a direct connection which doesn't have the 'softening' effect of the torque converter, especially when you think about the smack between full bore gear changes.
