Especially with how the cap is design, the hole extends down the center of the metering stick, so it's fairly easy for fluid to make it's way up and out

Yes, I do believe the whole was designed as a pressure vent release (also, the system can autobleed itself, air bubbles can work themselves out and make their way up the lines to the reservoir, which is probably one of the reasoning why it's there). Also, as a typical expansion type tank system, fluid volume increases/decreases as it gets hot/cold

I've seen people cover the hole, but I don't feel comfortable doing that. I honestly just carry a spare bottle along and fill as necessary
