Also why do the rears wear faster than the fronts, my tech seemed to think the fronts have more material on them from new

At least with my F30 brakes up front, the fronts have a little more material than the stock rears.
As to why the rears wear faster, our cars have an E-Diff, which basically just brakes the inside wheel in a turn to keep traction and prevent you from one-wheel peeling and destroying tires. I went through an entire set of rear pads in one weekend at the track (I did leave DSC on, though)
