The benefit is if you want a small RWD coupe and don't mind just an option or two you will most likely have a 128i for a very reasonable price.

There just isn't any competition for small RWD cars in the US. Honestly if the Mazda 3 sedan was RWD or AWD with the 2.3l Turbo I’d probably just go for that since it would be so much cheaper but still very fun. The best that is out there now is the Mustang GT and Mazda RX8 and they are not small cars and only the Mazda is reasonably light at 3,000 or so pounds. It also doesn’t come close to the power of a 335 or 135.
