Folks:
Hopefully I can clear it up the confusion for you. TwinPower Turbo is BMW's name for the combination of turbocharging with high pressure direct gasoline injection. The N54 was the first such engine. Since the time the N54 was put into service, the name TwinPower Turbo has been put into use. While the name is not shown on the N54 engine covers, this explains why the N54 is also referred to as a TwinPower Turbo engine in press releases and other literature. The combination of turbocharging and high pressure DI is what allows modern engines to produce very high outputs on very little fuel.
The N54 in the 1 Series M Coupe is not a mixture or "hybrid" of any other designs, aside from the acknowledged fact that it's very much an evolution of BMW engine architecture.
