Lowering the car at all on the stock dampers will shorten the life span of the damper itself. Obviously a greater drop will wear it out faster. Imagine walking around in a squat all day. That's what you're asking the dampers to do when you use lowering springs.

I'd say you're probably safe with ~1 inch. Lower than that and I would just go the coilover route.
