18x8. What step down? I'm using the same rear tire. What's rim width have to do with anything?
If anything the cornering has improved due to the wider stance, and dropping 8 pounds per corner certainly hasn't hurt either.
Ride quality
seems a little better, but it's hard to know for sure.
