Very interesting.

Question - does this rule apply retroactively to cars that have already been CPO'd and purchased prior to Jan 1 2014, or only to cars CPO'd Jan 1 2014 and forward?

For example:

1. 2009 e82 purchased CPO from dealership in 2011. CPO warranty expires 2015 (4 years original warranty plus 2 years CPO extended). The car was thus "CPO'd" in 2011
2. 2012 car is sold by 2nd owner (person who purchased it as CPO) to the 3rd owner via private party. Car is still CPO per BMW.
3. 2014 car is sold by 3rd owner to 4th owner. Is the car still CPO? Does BMW automatically terminate the warranty?

In the scenario above, the 3rd owner is getting screwed royally if the CPO is cancelled. Reason being, the 3rd owner purchased the car as a CPO and paid a premium thinking they could one day resell the car (if necessary) at a premium.

In this situation, I am the 3rd owner. I don't think I'll sell the car before the CPO warranty is up (or even after), but I know I was willing to pay the premium when buying the car not only because I was getting the CPO warranty, but also knowing that the CPO warranty follows the car (and not the owner). For BMW to suddenly change the rules really changes the way I valued the CPO warranty on the car.
