The use of the Y-Cable depends on your Year and specs.
If you have Pro iDrive and it's a late 2010(ish)build then it should only need the standard white apple cable.
Whichever one you end up using, it charges and plays.
All iPhones/iPods are the same as far as the car is concerned.
