Somehow the obvious was eluding me - the difference in functionality between the two USB input slots.
I was able to download music to the car's harddrive through the glove box USB port, but it wasn't simple. First, despite what the manual says on p 172, the system will not download from an mp3 player - or at least not my Sansa Zip Clip - only from a USB key. Second, to get the download menu to come up requires combining inputs from the iDrive wheel and the
OPTIONS button beside the wheel on the console - I had been fruitlessly trying to find "OPTIONS" in the on-screen menu system.
I loaded 7 GB - 860 songs - in about 20 mins. No more CD cases rattling around in the door pockets.
