I think you are right--it is really illogical....
A few ///M Coupe owners on the board have been ruffled about it--but not the vast majority....
Maybe I am just too young, but the original M1 doesn't do a whole lot for me. I can at least look at a 2002 or E30 M3 and appreciate it....not the case, for me, with the original M1.
That's why an additional use of the name, in logical order as the rest of BMW's car lineup ///M's, would make M1 the most logical choice....
We will see...
