If they can make something electronic vs. mechanical they will. The dipstick tube has to seal against metal and that seal deteriorates with time. In one weekend at a BMW club race there were 3 or 4 racers who had oil leaks that were from the stupid o-ring that seals the bottom of the dipstick tube. It's a real PITA to get to. Sure, they are out of warranty and BMW sells the parts but I think they see the electronic meter as a way to minimize moving parts.
I'm not 100% sold on the idea but that's my take on it.
