Did you see any downside to going from 18" to 17"? Going from a 255/35/R18 to a 255/40R17 increases the sidewall height by about 14% or just about 0.5". That will certainly reduce response with the additional sidewall flex. However some of that may be offset by a 9.0" wheel vs an 8.5" wheel.
