Not sure about the BMW fluid, but I think all washer fluids have some kind of alcohol/antifreeze component in it so that it doesn't freeze in the winter months.
Being in SoCal, I don't really worry about freezing, so I just use distilled water and a couple of drops of car wash soap (for better cleaning action)... And it won't damage the paint like an alcohol-based fluid possibly could.
