Well, every series of BMW has different offsets for their wheels. It's most likely due to the different suspensions and bodies for each respective model.

For instance, the non-M E46's have offsets of 41 and 50, front and rear respectively for 17" wheels and 47 and 50 for 18" wheels. The E46 M3 has fronts at ET47 and rears at ET26 for 18" wheels and the 19" offerings are ET47 and ET27.
