I wonder about the DISA units.

Your concern is valid for the Disa boxes. Some 2006 330i's had their Disa boxes replaced on e90post forum. My manifold had oil residue on the inside, i Imagine this causes disa to fail over time combined with wear and tear.
Everything else comes from your car and bolts onto the plastic manifold.
To replace the small disa, you have to take off the manifold. The larger disa is easier to reach on the side of the manifold. I would price out the boxes online or via a salvage yard to see what the cost could be.
Have you used tried to use the Sweedish junker site? They may have disa units only for a fair price and they certainly have manifolds.
carpart.com has some x3 manifolds available, send more emails out
