So that the car(Alternator) knows what size(Amp/hrs, and cold cranking amps) the battery is. There are three sizes of batteries for our cars(I believe).

Fact is the battery does need to be coded for the charging system to work properly. And lets not forget about the pyrotechnic charged positive cable that works along with the airbags in case of a deployment/accident.
