Look at this way: the 2006 M3 starts at just under $49,000
right now, and that's an M car with well over 300 hp. This car is due out in a couple months - you'd have to smoke a serious rock of crack to willingly pay nearly the same amount for a run of the mill 3 series with 30 hp less, and lacking features like an LSD and whatnot.
Personally, I think the new M3 will be in the 55k range and this car will start in the low 40s at the very most. BMW has been on a value trend lately and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
