If I saw this earlier it would've saved me much agony and pain on working with the spring compressors while the assembly is still mounted. It was an obscenely stupid way to do it.
Agreed, so much easier to remove the whole strut. Worst case is you need to hammer down in the hub assembly a little but it does come out.
