I used the Griot's one during my ED. It is indeed thicker than saran wrap. It is definitely not as easy to install as they show in the video. You really need to take the time to get it installed smoothly. As for thickness, after removal I did not find any nicks after driving 680 miles on the autobahn. When peeling off, you should do it slowly as some residue may be left over.
For protection, I think it's good enough. If you hit something larger of course it would not have made a difference really.
