Ok, I verified this today.
I didn't have the iPod in the car at all. I pulled out of my parking garage with the radio on a station that doesn't have an HD channel. I let it go for about 5 minutes, which would normally be plenty of time for it to turn off, then switched it to my NPR station, which has HD.
The analog signal was fine, and then as soon as it tried to switch it locked up and restarted. After that, HD no longer works at all.
