As it is basically a more advanced version of the ESP system (using the brakes to slow down a spinning wheel) I would presume it would be less predictable and slower to react than a purely mechanical solution like a torsen diff.
Check
this vid of the 135i (same E-diff tech as the 123d), you can see the diff braking the inside wheel intermittantly, and the car moves around a bit as a result. That being said, you could not do a drift like that with an open diff without holding it at a much wider angle so it evidently works
Edit: This video shows that the e-diff doesn't fully replace a proper mechanical solution in extreme situations. Compare it to
this video of a 120d with a Quaife.
