Whilst I understand if BMW intend not to provide a retrofit, still cannot see why it could not be made to work. Car has both Bluetooth and USB interfaces, so if it goes via the phone, it could be "Tethered" (Using the phone as a modem) just like from a PC now to provide Internet Access via an iDrive software update.
