I'm having the same problem with my 2011 128i that I purchased a few days ago. I was able to use the lightning cable in a previous vehicle that I test drove and have since found out that I have the very base speaker system which is why the straight USB option hasn't worked. Can you post the link to the USB adapter you purchased? I'm having a hard time using the Y adapter because the audio quality is so bad!
