I think it's also a reflection of total sales excess as there are a ton of 1series cars available.
Sales figures for BMW 1series in the USA show that in those five years a lot of cars were sold in the USA but we know very little has changed on this car.

Overall 2008-2012, 53000 cars were sold. The 2008 128/135 was an amazing car but little changed in all those years. The 1M represented a paradigm shift in capabilities and driving excitement....and at a very limited head count of 740, and made for one year only... so to me these resale values reflect a glut on one hand and a shortage on the other...bottom line almost $30,000 USD market value difference between my 2011 135 and 2011 1M.
