If you're just doing this for the sake of your spare, then you're better off just using a mismatched spare. Use the standard staggered setup, and if you ever get a flat, you can put on a mismatched spare on a temporary basis, until your regular tire is repaired/replaced.

Hell, you could even just use a donut, just like most cars use... a tiny little spare tire that won't take up too much trunk space, and although it's not a good idea to run it long-term, you just use it in case you get a flat.

To answer your other question, almost everybody here is running a staggered setup.
