for sealants or waxes I usually just label them and put them in a zip lock.

they have no abrasives so it will not scratch your paint.

At the min I would clean polishing/compounding pads after a few panels with the foam pad brush.

I would say as a rule you should clean them before the next detail.

I do have customers that use pads once and then throw them out.
