Couple things:
Media outlets - even Bimmerpost - tend to go optimistic on the vehicle year when its not known precisely. I somewhat doubt the new 1 series will launch the same year as the new 3 series, which is known to be coming in 2012 (as an MY2013).
Secondly, the various 1 series models will be released over the course of a few years, just as with the 3 series. I suspect the current 1 series coupe and convertible will be in production at least a year past the hatchbacks. If you figure the 5 door 1 series hatchback hits early 2013, then the coupe and convertible probably won't hit til 2014. That still only gives at most 3 years for the E82 1M, but that's still a lot better than just a year.

It suggests the new 1 will be a 2012, and the 1M given the schedule will be a 2011. Might be just one year of production. If that's the case I'll lease instead of buy.
