I have no inside knowledge of the BMW EDC algorithms, but the original edc utilizes accelerometers, that aftermarket systems do not have. So based on system inputs, i’d go for true EDC. I’d expect a dynamic control (like Ohlins/Volvo four-c) iso aftermarket static settings. Dackel long ago linked me to a friend who had overcome that the steerangle sensor had to be reprogrammed to be fully e82 compatible, which i did not pursue.
So a true EDC retrofit om 1m would yield a dynamic control, but to me it seemed technically more challenging than just assembling the M3 parts. That said, if you incorporate the M3 parts number list, it may work just fine.
