I have the Garmin (bmw unit). It clips onto the dash and is very user friendly. I have not actually used it that much however. Not sure about updating the maps or anything. My car is going into BMW this thursday so I might ask them to do it then.
I would highly recommend it ( thought I have nothing as a base for comparison).
