However I tried using just the usb cable (the original cable from apple) and a 2nd generation nano and it works flawlessly. I have full integration with the idrive and can use my steering wheel buttons and the songs, lists, artists, etc all appear on the display.
is this normal? as i am now confused since seeing that some people are requiring the Y cable for integration.

Y Cable allows genre's to show up and also for playing of DRM music purchased from the itunes store... probabaly a bit less relevant now considering apples removing DRm from the store.
