I just read an article in Automobile magazine about the 1M and they basically say that the 1M is the first M car in a long time to put functionality over form; i.e., it's catering to the true enthusiasts and not the general public with a few extra $$ and the need to out-do the Joneses. They even mention the exhaust drone and attribute it to part of the 1M being a real M car and not a watered-down performance version of an everyday BMW that's catered to the rich and high profit margins.
