If you want a balanced car that has a solid powerplant and drive train with 5 years of kinks worked out of it so it will be solid for you then I say go buy one of the last great cars to be made, a 128i.

This is a good argument in the 228i vs 128i battle.
The N20 228i is for someone after HP #'s. I recall a stage 2 tune N20 pushes 290hp @ crank with exhaust right now (just above the FBO 128i at 270 ish hp). Then people will start adding meth kits and all that to break 300hp.
But have you considered if the other mods we love on the e8x 128i will come over to the 228i? Things like M3 control arms & Subframe bushes, long term reliability ( no carbon buildup or fuel pump issues), no idrive & no sunroof, the six cylinder sound, and the fact that BMW has made a 1m on the same platform.
Hence e82 for me.
228i for me has drawbacks: its looks ( not sold on them yet), electronic steering, 4 cyl engine (bmw for me is mostly 6) , limited colour offerings, and unknown M3 control arm compatibility.
If I had to buy a 228i at this stage I would do the following: Buy it in ValenciaOrange or Red, skip the M pack, get the sport pack instead (black window trim), skip the suspension upgrade (go aftermarket), sport seats, minimal everything else .
