I understand your "figuring", and you may well be right. But there's no info available about that, at either the NHTSA website or the BMW one.

I figure that they're giving the ten year extension to some 128s, because they have lower power. Maybe those with some other magic (little high rpm use?) recorded by the electronics? BMW no doubt stores the readouts.

The bottom line is that we're all just guessing. If we had VIN ranges for the various solutions, that would tell us more. Not available.

The ten year letter does say it extends to subsequent owners.
