Let's Install the Smarttop Convertible Controller

Here is a write up of the installation of the Smarttop controller on my '08 135i convertible.

This module is completely plug and play using OEM plugs and sockets and the supplied cable harness.

The design and construction is totally first class

I bought the module on ebay for $284

Smarttop (mods4cars) has comprehensive install instructions on their website

http://www.mods4cars.com/sms/shop/in...manuals&menu=1

The trickiest part is removing the rear headrest retention brackets.

After you pull the headrests out you have to remove the brackets that hold them in place.

I made this tool from a piece of metal coat hanger to release the clips - it doesn't need any force just a twisting
technique retract the plastic clip.

Releasing the first socket was a pain and took a while to figure out. After I released the first one and "knew the trick" the
other 3 sockets took seconds to release.

After these brackets were removed the complete install took less than an hour.

The next step is remove the bottom of the rear seat - just pull it up and remove.

The back of the seat is held in place by 2 - 14mm nuts. Unscrew these and pull the bottom of the seat back forward
and pull the seat back upward and remove.

Here is the existing controller behind the left side of the seat back.

Because the module comes with a plug and play harness the connection takes seconds.

Simply remove the large male connector from the original controller and plug into the female connector of the
supplied harness. Then plug the male plug of the harness into the female connector of the original module.

Then plug the remaining male connector into the Smarttop module.

I used Velcro to secure the module to the bracing behind the rear seat back.

I had already programmed the desired functions of the Smarttop module using my laptop and left the USB cable connected to the module
and routed this so it is available in the rear seat area for future programming and / or updates.

I then tested the control - one touch control from the dash and total control from the key remote.

Works perfectly - multiple options available depending on your preferences.

Once I confirmed everything worked I replaced the seat back and bottom.

This is how the top control should have been from day 1.

Now I can open / close the to with "one touch" from the dash switches.

I can control opening and closing the top and windows with the remote.

Definitely a worthwhile mod that is not too challenging !!!!
