Wow, thanks for the nice write up. I do believe this is an M version of the 1 series. Additionally, I agree with you completely, when you say an M version of the 1 series will not cannibalize sales of the M3. The M3 is an established icon with an intoxicating naturally aspirated V8 engine, while the 1series will offer a FI engine for those who prefer that type of engine. Furthermore, some people will prefer the looks and size of the M3 over the 1 series M and vice versa, so each car brings different flavors to the M arena.
