I saw somewhere that the study was done in Europe. The European 1 series engine options are a lot more broad than ours and the extra options are all less powerful. BMWs in Germany are somewhat like Fords and Chevies here. I think these differences help to explain the results.

The other factor that would be true here too, however, is a lot of people are like my late wife. They just want the vehicle to go when they need to go somewhere. They do not care what engine it has, where the drive wheels are, etc.. They just want a tool to get from point A to point B. I'm not sure how many U. S. BMW buyers fit this but I am sure there are some.
