Before attempting this change - have you driven a 1er with the paddles, for an extended time? Mine came with the paddles, so didn't have a choice. Since they are attached to the steering wheel instead of the steering column, they move with the wheel. When you are making sharp turns, when your hands have to leave the 10-2 position, the paddles are no longer where your hands are. It is almost impossible to upshift in this situation, because you don't know where the paddles are located.
If you have driven a manual before, using the shifter to make the shifts has a more natural feel.
