I think there is a rule of thumb for how much you should save on a yearly basis to prepare for possible repairs once a car is out of warranty. I would look that up and compare it to BMW's extended warranty. IMHO I would keep the 1er no mater what. You're having a blast driving it, it's (if i'm not wrong) the last NA 6 cylinders engine which will make the car an item to have for and driving enthusiast, and I would tend to agree with you on the F20. Having test-drove the F30 on several occasions, it feels more like an appliance than the ultimate driving machine and one can certainly worry this might affect the F20.
