BMW has already determined that for your engine. You can use either a 0W-30, 5W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40. They all will work for your car and protect it well. There is no "ideal" oil. Just make sure to use a LL-01 approved oil.

+1. I'm a strong believer in frequent oil changes(strictly 5k mile changes). Oil is cheap, engines are not.
When i track my car i plan on moving that down to 3k miles.
