Seatbelt pre-tensioners are usually small explosive charges that only fire when the safety system tells them to do so! When they fire - they pull the seat belt tighter to stop you moving as far!

Most seatbelts also have a fold sewn into the webbing which unfolds when a certain amount of force is applied to the seatbelt! This helps prevent your body from decelerating too quickly in an accident!
