I've run K&N filter in my bikes and cars, and on my Laser/Mits turbo for 10yrs with no problems at all.
If you do the cleaning and oiling properly you'll have no issues with the oil.
Cleaning and re-oiling is very easy to do, but can be done wrong.
Some people simply use too much oil and/or don't allow the oil to set before reinstalling.
In my experience, it's best to clean on a day when you won't be driving for about 24 hours. You clean and dry the filter completely, then oil it properly and let it sit. Then reinstall and you're good to go.
My Laser turbo ran great for 10yrs and over 140k miles before I sold it, still running strong. It had a large round K&N.
