About 10 years ago I was driving in southeastern Oregon, in a part of the state that has almost no one in a very large area (1 person per square mile sort of place) and I was driving a rented Mustang at 10:00 or so at night at well in excess of 100 MPH when suddenly there was a cow in the middle of the road. They don't use fences out there and fortunately the there was enough room and the cow didn't have enough time to react and I was able to make it around the cow, but it seriously changed how I drive in that part of the state.
