I had a problem in a 335i that was caused by using dishwashing detergent instead of screen cleaner. ( Cleans dishes doesn't it? I thought ). Over time the detergent formed a sludge in the bottom of the bottle which blocked the pickup. I had to remove the wheel well inner guard to get at the bottle in order to clean out the grunge.
