I think there is some reading between the lines to be done here.

He says that the M-variant 1 series will not be named M1 due to the badge's heritage. However, I don't believe they are that sentimental and rather he is just towing the company line. A more logical, and strategic reason for keeping the M1 moniker reserved would be to allow redevelopment of the original M1 supercar at some stage. Remember, that is what the M1 was and moving forward is their best platform for releasing a new supercar (in respects to naming) - possibly off a number of the concepts recently released. Food for thought?
