I always try to look at this from the other side of the fence. If I owned an original M1, (I had looked into acquiring one 30 years ago), I would not be pleased if BMW named a 2 door 4 seat relatively high production car, after a unique mid engined (only mid engine BMW ever made) collectable (first M car ever made) super car (while it was not the fastest car of its era, it was classified as a super car in its day).

I am proud of BMW for respecting their own heritage and not giving in to public whim.
