I think it's just old-school marketing, trying to create customers for life. Whatever $$ is ceded in providing the ED service will be made back a few times over on subsequent sales.

One reason they don't lose a ton of money on this is that the number of ED's is miniscule compared to the overall number of cars they sell for U.S. delivery.
