Yes, it depends on the state you register the car in, whether you do or do not have to pay any tax to register the car. I've heard some states waive the tax IF the car has been registered to you for more than one year. Some states waive the tax IF your still active duty. And some want their $$$ now!

Btw... when you ship your car back to the states, be sure to get the USAEUR shipping ("QQ") tags. Most states allow you to drive on the USA QQ tags for a few months or even up to one year.
