I'm not anywhere near your end of the country, but I find that some of the most difficult snow to drive in is the really wet slushy kind (which I imagine is what you mostly get around Vancouver). The colder hard-packed stuff seems easier to manage.

The thing I always tell people about getting winter tires to remember is that its that much less mileage you're putting on your summer tires. And for most BMWs, winter tires are cheaper than summer tires. The only extra financial outlay is the cost of the rims and getting the tires switched over.
